Pre-empt and Prevail
The lesson you learned in school about the second person to throw a punch getting in trouble rings true in real world self-defense. Going second in a fight means you’re behind, possibly have already take a strike, and have a reactionary gap to contend with. That’s bigger trouble than the principles office. In cases where it’s warranted, hitting first is the best way to end a fight or put yourself in a better position to do so.
